The Story: THE GIRL WHO TOUCHED THE STARS - My mother, Clara McMahon, in her senior year of High School (1945) in New York City, wrote to the major Hollywood stars of her day with one simple question, "what is your favorite poem?" She intended to publish the book and give it to the returning WWII servicemen and their families as an inspiration for their devoted service. Over 100 movie legends responded by letter along with their favorite poems. Some were even handwritten, such as Lucille Ball, Gene Kelly, Boris Karloff, Basil Rathbone & Loretta Young. Others are Shirley Temple, Bing Crosby, Bette Davis, James Cagney, Joan Crawford, and many more. So heartwarming that so many prominent stars responded to a young high school girl in 1945.

She wrote: "The people of the world, particularly at this time, need the spiritual exaltation of poetry. However, only a small fraction of men and women read poetry. In this anthology, tying in great poems with great personalities whom the people feel they know, a larger number of people may be induced to read and treasure the gems which have made the world better."

Sadly, our mother passed away due to breast cancer at the early age of just 49 and was unable to fulfill her dream. Thank You - Donald W. Minck, Kathleen L. Minck, & Kevin P. Minck
